Venkatesh Sheregar, our Part-time Biweekly MBA Intake 2023 student, has over 17 years of experience in leading Packaging Design and Engineering. His journey from Mumbai to Hong Kong via Shanghai exemplifies a dedication to integrating sustainability into business practices across geographies. This interview explores his motivations for pursuing an MBA and how the HKUST program is shaping his career.

A Commitment to Sustainability

With a strong background in Packaging R&D, Venkatesh has honed a focus on creating innovative, sustainable solutions. Holding over 50 patents, his passion for circularity and sustainable practices drives his work.

“I’ve always believed that packaging is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about consumer centricity with functionality and sustainability,” he says, emphasizing the growing importance of sustainable solutions in addressing global environmental challenges.

Enhancing Understanding of Business Management and Finance

With over 17 years of working experience in R&D and manufacturing at MNC and leading FMCG companies such as L’Oreal, Unilever, Mondelez, and Vitasoy, Venkatesh acknowledges the necessity of a solid foundation in business strategy and finance.

Attracted by Hong Kong's position as a vital business hub in Asia, he values the unique insights it offers into global markets. HKUST MBA program's emphasis on entrepreneurial thinking and sustainability aligns with his goal of driving transformations in the consumer products industry.

“The MBA is helping me develop critical skills in financial modeling, market analysis, and decision-making frameworks,” he states. “By gaining a deeper understanding of corporate finance, investment strategies, and risk management, I can create compelling business cases for sustainability initiatives that balance environmental responsibility with profitability.”

This newfound knowledge is invaluable as Venkatesh aims to advocate for sustainable practices within multinational corporations.

Influence of the Part-Time Bi-Weekly MBA on Career Trajectory

One of the standouts features of the HKUST MBA program is its flexibility, particularly for working professionals. Venkatesh is enrolled in the Part-Time Bi-Weekly MBA program, which has been an ideal fit for his busy schedule.

“The program allows me to continue my work while pursuing my studies,” he notes. “The courses on strategy and management, governance in corporate settings, and global business strategy are refining my skills in developing actionable roadmaps for engaging stakeholders. I can apply what I learn directly to my role, enhancing my strategic mindset in real-time.”

Engaging with a diverse cohort of professionals has broadened his perspectives on leadership, innovation, and the nuances of business. This collaborative learning environment reinforces his belief in the importance of cross-functional, interdisciplinary approaches to solving complex problems.

“Overall, the program has made me more confident in pursuing leadership roles that prioritize sustainability in decision-making,” Venkatesh adds. “It has ultimately enhanced my ability to influence positive change in the industry.”

Driving Positive Change through the HKUST MBA Program

Venkatesh encourages prospective HKUST MBA students passionate about sustainability to combine their technical expertise with strong business strategies. He stresses the value of actively participating in discussions with peers from diverse industries. Taking on leadership roles in sustainability-focused projects within the program and leveraging HKUST’s extensive network to boost career growth. Venkatesh emphasizes viewing sustainability not merely as an ethical obligation but as a strategic business enabler, capable of driving long term profitability and brand differentiation. His insights highlight how the HKUST MBA equips students to lead impactful and meaningful sustainability initiatives.
