Ilias Trachanas (Digital MBA Intake 2024), originally from Athens, Greece, has carved a niche for himself in the technological sector through his extensive background in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a PhD in telecommunications from Germany. His professional journey spans significant roles in research and development within the software and printing industry, leading him to his current position as the Director of Software Development at a leading Chinese firm in the printing industry.

Choosing HKUST's Digital MBA: A Strategic Decision for Continuous Learning

Driven by a lifelong ethos of continuous learning, Ilias decided to enhance his technical expertise with business acumen by pursuing an MBA. The HKUST Digital MBA program attracted him due to its modern approach, globally recognized faculty, and flexible learning options, aligning perfectly with his personal and professional life. "The HKUST Digital MBA is a cutting-edge program that perfectly matches my current personal situation as well as my learning expectations," Ilias explains.

MBA Goals: Preparing for the C-Suite

Ilias’ aspirations extend beyond the acquisition of knowledge; he is preparing for advanced leadership roles and the entrepreneurial leap. "Upon graduation, I aim to deepen my understanding of interpersonal dynamics and be fully prepared for C-suite roles," says Ilias. His MBA journey is focused on mastering business strategy, negotiation, and problem-solving, essential skills for leading in today’s dynamic business environment.

Leveraging Diversity: Learning from a Global Cohort

The diversity of the HKUST DiMBA cohort, predominantly composed of professionals with extensive experience in Asia, provides Ilias with a unique opportunity to broaden his perspectives. He values the exchange of ideas and problem-solving techniques across different cultures, which he believes are crucial for global leadership. "I expect to exchange ideas about ways of thinking and problem-solving across diverse Asian and European cultures," he notes.

Strategic Career Advancement: Breaking into the C-Suite

As a seasoned senior manager in software development, Ilias recognizes the barriers to entering the upper echelons of corporate leadership. Through the HKUST Digital MBA, he aims to overcome these barriers and ascend to roles such as CDO, CTO, or CEO within the printing industry or potentially spearhead his venture. "I hope to develop my own business ideas and foster a supportive environment for a successful business," he articulates.
