In the competitive world of management consulting, professional growth requires more than just experience – it demands strategic upskilling and continuous learning. This understanding led Carmen Chan (Full-time MBA Intake 2024), an accomplished consultant, to a pivotal decision in her career journey. "I wanted to upskill myself and plug gaps in my business knowledge," she reveals, articulating a common challenge faced by many mid-career professionals seeking to advance to senior leadership positions.

The decision to pursue an MBA emerged from a careful evaluation of her career trajectory. While her consulting background provided a strong foundation in problem-solving and client management, Carmen identified specific areas where deeper expertise would prove valuable – particularly in financial modeling and marketing. "To become a more well-rounded business leader, I wanted to hone my interpersonal skills as well as build a strong network," she explains. This comprehensive approach to professional development would ultimately guide her toward one of Asia's most prestigious business schools.

THE PULL OF ASIA'S WORLD CITY

When contemplating where to pursue her MBA, Carmen felt ready for a bold change. "I got a sense of 'itchy feet' and wanted a change of scene," she recalls, describing her decision to leave the UK for Hong Kong. The city's magnetic appeal lies in its unique blend of East-meets-West culture. From its renowned culinary scene to abundant hiking trails, Hong Kong offered the perfect backdrop for both professional growth and personal adventure.

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT AT HKUST

The search for the right MBA program led Carmen to HKUST, where she discovered an intimate learning environment with 57 students in her cohort. This small class size ensures deep connections and meaningful exchanges among peers. The school's dedication to career development, evidenced through personal advisors and a comprehensive alumni mentoring program, aligned perfectly with her aspirations. Combined with a curriculum balancing rigorous academics and practical experience, HKUST emerged as her ideal choice.

A JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY

Reflecting on the application process and her early experiences at HKUST, Carmen offers an insightful observation: "Anyone who has ever thought about applying to MBA programs knows that it is full of self-reflection." This introspective journey has already begun shaping her experience, as she explores new interests, builds regional networks, and develops her public speaking confidence. With clear plans to transition into corporate strategy, Carmen's early impressions confirm her choice. "Having been here for a few weeks now, I think I've made the right choice," she shares, embodying the transformative spirit that HKUST's MBA program promises.
